Graham LippSmith: The law protects those who have been harmed by companies by giving people the opportunity to file actions as either individuals or as a class. For individuals, they usually have a lot of harm to that one person so they can go forward alone, but sometimes when you have harm that’s just a little bit to everybody involved or a little bit to a lot of people, that’s when you go forward as a class action and the law gives everybody that avenue to go try to protect their rights and get back what’s been taken from them by big companies.

You file a class action lawsuit by first finding a lawyer. The lawyer then takes your case as an individual case and moves it forward through the procedures in the court to get to a point where the court eventually deems that case to be a class action on behalf of not just you, as the individual, but on behalf of the hundreds or thousands of people involved in the case.
