[GRAPHIC: Super Lawyers, Michael Germain rated by Super Lawyers, Tampa attorney Michael Germain discusses what it takes to be a great bad faith insurance lawyer.]

Michael Germain: Insurance companies have a duty to act in good faith. Quite often, though, they don't. What makes me an effective bad faith insurance lawyer is that I represented insurance companies. I counseled them on their obligations towards their insured policy holders. I know how they operate. I know how they evaluate claims. And I know how they try to avoid paying losses.

The most pivotal bad faith case that I've personally handled was when I represented an insurance company’s claims manager against the insurance company that insured his own house. He let them know who he was, and they still didn't handle his claim properly. It was then that I realized how vigilant we have to be to make sure that insurance companies don't treat insureds unfairly.
