PAUL D'AMORE: Tort reform is a movement that's taken hold in the last 10-15 years, whereby the political message to the masses has been that trial lawyers or lawyers who represent injured people are really just in it for the money and they're trying to win what's called the litigation lottery. And what's being left behind is the true job that we're doing, which is trying to represent injured people against the companies and corporations, doctors and hospitals that have caused them harm, to hold them accountable and to get the compensation that these folks need to move on with their lives.

But the tort reform movement has done a good job of getting new legislation passed. Here's an example. In Maryland, since the mid-1980s, we've had damages caps on medical malpractice and personal injury cases. That limits the amount of money that an injured person can get in certain situations. It's important that injured clients understand the tort reform and the way it may negatively impact their case. And it's important that they have a lawyer that understands how to operate within that environment in order to keep the playing field as level as possible
