[GRAPHIC: Ask Super Lawyers, Can I sue after a car accident in Pennsylvania?, Attorney Douglas J. Olcott responds, THOMSON REUTERS]

Douglas J. Olcott: After you’ve been involved in a car accident you have certain legal rights. You have a right to be compensated for your medical bills, to have them paid for by your automobile insurance company, you have a right to get the property damage to your vehicle repaired, and then if you’ve been injured you also have a right to seek compensation for the pain, the suffering, the loss of enjoyment of life, if you’ve missed time from work to replace the income that you lost as a result of the injury.

In Pennsylvania the fact that you’ve been involved in an accident doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re going to end up having to file a law suit.

The first step is after contacting an attorney to allow that attorney to contact the appropriate parties to begin the process of pursuing a claim.

What we first try and do is work thorough the system informally to try and get that victim compensated. If we’re unable to get fair compensation then we take the case to the next step.
