[GRAPHIC: Ask Super Lawyers, What is the purpose of underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage in Pennsylvania?, Attorney Dallas W. Hartman responds, THOMSON REUTERS]

Dallas W. Hartman: In Pennsylvania on your own policy there’s an under and uninsured motorist option which provides you coverage in case the person who hits you doesn’t have enough insurance to pay for your claim.

It’s very important that you have adequate under and uninsured motorist and that you stack those. What stacking means is you have the number of vehicles that you own times the amount of insurance.

If you have $50,000 of coverage and three vehicles should take 3 x 50 so you have $150,000 of coverage to protect you if someone hurts you that has no insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance to pay for you.
